Thank You to Our Wonderful Sponsors!
On a recent trip to West Virginia we visited a dog sanctuary that is overloaded with rescued dogs.
Most of the dogs live outside in make-shift kennels and need to be brought up to New England where they can be
adopted into permanent homes.
 |
Nikita is possibly a purebred Australian Shepherd. She is very
gentle, has the SOFTEST fur, and likes to "shake" your hand! She is only 35
lbs. and is 5 to 6 years old. She was tied for 4 years but doesn't hold that
against anyone, and has been off the chain for a year now! She is very good
with children and is ok with cats but takes awhile to get used to and accept
another dog. She is great on leash and loves to ride! Nikita recently lost
her front leg after several dogs attacked her through a fence at the
sanctuary where she is staying. She needs to get out of there, especially
now with her disability. She first needs sponsors and then needs a dog-savvy
adopter who doesn't have other dogs. She's fine with cats.

Gypsy is a corgi/beagle mix whose look of desperation haunts us. She is the sweetest dog and has
been living in an outside pen for several years. She is
8 or 9 years old now. She will need blood work, to make sure she's healthy, and vaccinations and a health
certificate in order to travel.
Sponsors: Tammy Richardson Scott Craig Barbara Gordon-Wise Kristina Costanzo Carole VaJames Robert Stein

 |
Tonka is the most beautiful dog, with a long matted coat. One of our teen volunteers brushed out her coat
and she looked so beautiful. She is thought to be dog aggressive, but she went up to a puppy and licked and nuzzled her.
We think it's because she barks through the fenced in pen at the other dogs as she has been there for 8 years. Please
help us to save Tonka. She is 8 or
9 years old now. She will need blood work, to make sure she's healthy, and vaccinations and a health certificate in
order to travel.

Laddie is a gorgeous Collie/golden mix boy. He has been living outside for several years
and needs to live in a home where he can be loved and doted on. He will need blood work, to make sure
he's healthy, and vaccinations and a health certificate in order to travel.

Amy is an older dog who looks to be a Dobie mix. She has skin conditions and needs a few sponsors so
she can get the right diet and medical treatment. She may never be adopted, but we can at least help her to
have a quality life at the rescuer's home.

Volunteers Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro
Update From Rebecca (1/16/07 7:49AM)
Laura & I reached the Roof of Africa on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,345 ft.) at 10:50a.m. (Tanz. time) on Sunday, January 14th
after a grueling climb that started from Barafu Camp (15,300 feet) at 4:15 a.m!! Temperatures were well below
freezing and the wind whipped the majority of our ascent by head-lamp. Hands down, this was by far the hardest
thing I have ever done!
The week before our climb the mountain was hit with a snow storm the likes of which have not been seen in 30 years,
blanketing almost the entire upper half of the mountain in 4+ feet of snow. I can't wait to be able to send side-by-side
pictures showing what the mountain looked like both before the storm and during our climb! While this changed our
plans and we were not able to camp at Crater Camp (18,500 ft.) - which would have provided a much easier and shorter
summit push - the snow was a blessing in disguise as it made the usually treacherous climb down much, much easier.
It tightened up the loose scree and blanketed our falls as we trod and slipped down the mountain. It also afforded a
creative and quicker descent method in many parts. Sledding down the side of a mountain at 19,000 feet - on your
butt - while negotiating lava rocks is about as exhilarating as it gets!!
We will post pictures after we return on the 26th after some well deserved R&R in Africa.
If you were planning to donate to Save A Dog as part of our Roof of Africa campaign, it is not too late!!!
Information can be found at www.roof2007.com. Remember, 100% of your donation goes to Save A Dog - we paid
for this trip out of personal funds!! If we can get to another internet connection, we will send more info soon.
Another party that climbed with us had a satellite connection and uploaded day-by-day updates so I will try to get the link.
Thanks to all of you for your support and I look forward to sharing pictures and stories when I return!!
Rebecca

Copper
|
Copper is a very sweet Dachshund who was rescued from a very abusive, neglectful
situation where she was kicked and thrown and sat on. You would never know it,
though, as she is the friendliest little thing. She is being evaluated for a
growth on her hind quarters and is currently being treated for a bladder infection.
We are looking for a few sponsors for her as her medical expenses have exceeded $600
so far and she may need surgery. If you would like to be a sponsor for her please
send a donation in Copper's name and we will post your name as a sponsor next to her picture.
Update: Copper continues to improve although she has had several bouts with a chronic bladder infection.
She has trimmed down tremendously and is being adopted by her foster mom. Thank you very much for your
support for this precious little dog. Our vet believes she is going to soon be a healthy dog and we can
already see tremendous improvement in her overall well being.

Annie
Annie is an 8 year old dog who was rescued from a high volume shelter where
she was used as a "test" dog to see if other dogs were dog aggression. She was
there since early December and recently rescued by Save A Dog. When we got her she looked
14 because of her bone structure and the way she hobbles around, but two vets have
confirmed much younger teeth and put her at about 8. Annie has cataracts and complete
atrophy in her rear leg muscles. Her coat doesn't even feel like a dog's coat, but more
like a goats or an animal who has been living outside. She deserves so much better than
what she got and we're determined to give it to her, no matter what it takes. We would like to
have her worked up with exrays, acupuncture and holistic care, but we need your help. She is
worth every penny as she has a heart of gold and deserves to live out her final years in the
comfort of a loving owner.

Update 2/28/06: Cocoa is finally released from the vet's and is in a foster home.
She is still leaky but we expect she will make progress over the next few weeks.
Thank you all for your support.
Update 2/17/06: Cocoa spent a week in her foster home, but she is back at the vet
because she is still having severe incontinence problems. On Friday, the vet called to say
she is in touch with a specialist as there seems to be no improvement in her bladder functioning.
They would like to keep her for another week, so we are asking for additional donations. We are also
in touch with our homeopathic supplier to see if there are some remedies we can try to strengthen
her urethral sphincter muscles. We will note any additional sponsor support on our Web site.
Thank you all for your continued support of Cocoa, the world's sweetest lab.
